Like Bible/Torah, “Hoopla” Hits Shelves with Little Fanfare
Boulder, CO November 2, 2006—
Like many of the greatest books ever written, Hoopla, a 432-page book about world renowned advertising agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky, will arrive largely unheralded.
The publisher, Powerhouse Books, has allocated no funds whatsoever for the book’s promotion, and author Warren Burger has carefully avoided participation in any sort of pre-release book tour.
But according to CP+B Partner and Chief Creative Officer Alex Bogusky, the lack of hype is not an oversight or marketing blunder. “It’s tactical,” said Bogusky. “Look at the Bible, or the Torah. The publishers could have promoted them aggressively prior to release, but instead they took a smarter approach, seeding the books out to the underground and letting them blow up organically.”
Hoopla is scheduled to hit shelves January 15, 2007, and will be available at retailers nationwide, including Barnes & Noble, Borders, and Amazon. Unlike the Bible and Torah, which were initially free, Hoopla will retail for around $45.00. However, as Bogusky points out, “Those books came out a long time ago. Adjusted for inflation, $45.00 is very close to free.”
It’s nice to know CP+B reads this blog and decides to post their PR on the site (see above)
Sounds like a Microsoft Vista release date- too late for the holiday gift buying season- heads should roll for the missed pre-holiday ship date.
I guess I won’t be getting a copy under the tree- and, I doubt Alex will send me an autographed pre-release copy.
In other news, one of our former interns/employees has been invited to the Boulder office for a summer internship- unpaid. I’m hiring him on his break to help him be able to afford working at Crispin to help him develop. He’s worth paying Alex.
just got my copy via amazon today. i’m posting pics of the front and back cover and writing a little blurb about it over on my blog. i’d say they’re certainly trying to create some buzz by what they’ve done with the dust jacket.
